Is it Africa's turn? FSI scholars look at progress in the world's poorest region

By the turn of this century, sub-Saharan Africa had experienced 25 years of economic and political disaster. In the May/June 2008 issue of Boston Review, economist Edward Miguel tracks comparably hopeful economic trends throughout sub-Saharan Africa and suggests that we may be seeing a turnaround. Program on Global Justice Director Joshua Cohen and Brown University professor Glenn Loury analyze the controversy unfolding between Barack Obama and his former pastor Jeremiah Wright. The 52-minute "diavlog" on Bloggingheads is tabbed by topic and uses split-screen streaming videos to feature two people in remote locations. Blix talks to Boston Review, will hold Global Justice workshop

Hans Blix, the U.N.'s chief weapons inspector from 2000-03, led the inspections in Iraq prior to the U.S. invasion. On the five-year anniversary of the invasion, Dr. Blix spoke with Rebecca Tuhus-Dubrow, associate editor of Boston Review Books, about what makes a good diplomat, the Iraq inspections, and his new book from Boston Review Books calling for new, global disarmament efforts. He will discuss his book, Why Nuclear Disarmament Matters, at a special Program on Global Justice workshop Friday, April 4. Read more »

International grants totaling $1 million awarded to interdisciplinary Stanford research teams

FSI scholars Josh Cohen, Thomas Heller, Erik Jensen, Terry Karl, and Helen Stacy are part of research teams that received funding from Stanford's Presidential Fund for Innovation in International Studies (PFIIS), which in February awarded its third round of just under $1 million for interdisciplinary research. "It is especially gratifying to see the younger faculty competing for these grants, eager to generate new knowledge and new solutions and help train a new generation of leaders," said Coit D. Blacker, chair of the International Initiative Executive Committee and director of Stanford's Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. Read more »

Full video of the Google.org course on poverty and development that Program on Global Justice Director Joshua Cohen moderated from September to November 2007 is now available online at YouTube.com. The 10-week course, which focused on understanding poverty and development at the global, national, local, and personal levels, was the first of three courses on Google.org's main areas of philanthropic activity. The Program on Global Justice is very pleased to welcome Visiting Professor Charles Beitz to FSI and Stanford University. Professor Beitz is Edward S. Sanford Professor of Politics at Princeton University, author of Political Theory and International Relations and of Political Equality, and editor of Philosophy & Public Affairs. He will be visiting the Global Justice program this spring.

Panel talks workers' rights

A panel discussion on "Global Competitiveness: Economics, Ethics, and the Global Labor Force"--moderated by Joshua Cohen, director of the Program on Global Justice at the Freeman Spogli Institute (FSI) for International Studies and professor of political science, philosophy, and law--focused on the global push to improve the working environment, mainly in the textile industry. The panel discussed the implication of such efforts for Stanford, which gives out licenses to manufacture its branded apparel.

Cohen leads Google.org course on global poverty and development

In September Google.org launched the first of three courses on its main areas of philanthropic activity--Global Development, Global Health, and Climate Change. Josh Cohen, director of the Program on Global Justice at FSI Stanford and professor of political science, philosophy, and law, is moderating the 10-week course, which focuses on understanding poverty and development at the global, national, local, and personal levels. "Google has an extraordinary collection of creative employees," says Cohen. "This course on global poverty aims to enlist their energetic creativity in addressing one of our most commanding moral challenges." Read more »

Global Justice: Looking Forward

FSI's Program on Global Justice (PGJ), now finishing its first year, explores issues at the intersection between political values and the realities of global politics. The aim is to build conversations and research programs that integrate normative ideas--toleration, fairness, accountability, obligations, rights, representation, and the common good--into discussions about fundamental issues of global politics, including human rights, global governance, and access to such basic goods as food, shelter, clean water, education, and health care. Cohen gives Tanner lectures at Berkeley

Program on Global Justice Director Joshua Cohen delivered the prestigious Tanner Lectures on Human Values at the University of California at Berkeley from April 10 to April 12, 2007. In his lectures on "Power, Reason, and Politics," Cohen discussed the role of public reason in a democratic society and global political society. Commentators included Charles Larmore, Elizabeth S. New FSI Program on Global Justice

New to FSI, the Program on Global Justice aims to bring normative ideas from moral and political philosophy into discussions about human rights, global governance, and access to basic goods, and at the same time to ensure that normative discussions of these issues are informed by the best current social-scientific and policy thinking. The program is directed byJoshua Cohen, professor of political science, philosophy, and law who has just moved from MIT to Stanfor d. The program has three visitors this academic year: Adam Hosein and Helena De Bres, both PhD students in philosophy from MIT writing dissertations on issues related to global justice, and Laurence Simon, professor and director, Sustainable International Development Programs and associate dean for Academic Planning at Brandeis' Heller School (winter and spring quarters). The Linda Randall Meier Research Workshop on Global Justice, coordinated with the Humanities Center, meets every other Friday, 1:15-3 p.m., in Encina Hall 008.
